You know what? Maybe oppressed groups have learned to see everything as a subtle form of oppression. Maybe women do assume men are predatory in cases where they aren’t. Maybe gay people do assume homophobia in places where it doesn’t exist. Maybe Black people do assume racism in interactions that it didn’t happen.

But that doesn’t come from nowhere. These are safety skills. It’s not wrong for oppressed people to be wary of members of their opressirs group. They aren’t being bigoted by assuming the worst.

We teach our children to not talk to any strangers, even though most strangers aren’t pedophile kidnappers and murderers. We just understand that this isn’t something you can know. We teach them to always assume that it is unsafe. To err on the side of caution.

People who grow up in an oppressed group learn to assume that members of thei oppressing group are not safe. We err on the side of caution. It’s a safety measure. End of story.

When a member of an oppressed group assumes that your actions stem from oppression, stop being butthurt. Question whether you did something wrong that made them think that. But if not? If it was just an unfair assumption against you move the fuck on
