not to be fake deep but i need to talk to y’all about the end of the world.
lots of people are scared right now. i’m one of them. the world is in a bad way and it’s hard to see where hope will come from. i hear a lot of talk about how the world is ending, or things are over, or we lost.
and i have to tell you something much scarier: there is no win or lose. there is no end of the world.
because most of us are going to live.
people in Europe during the bubonic plague thought the world was ending. that was a serious disease crisis; nearly a third of Europe died. that means two-thirds of Europe lived. indigenous people in what is now the Americas had a much higher death rate than 30% in the plagues that came before and with colonization, and in the genocide that followed. indigenous people are still here. the AIDS crisis killed queer people at a terrifying rate and is still killing people around the world. HIV+ people are still here. queer people are still here.
and i know this is hard to think about, but i need to say it: people who aren’t marginalized are almost certainly going to live. the more privilege you have, the safer you are. america did not cease to exist when it lost a generation of queer people to AIDS, even if it sometimes felt like that to my friends who lived through it. the white settlers who murdered indigenous people lived. there will be survivors, both the oppressed and the oppressors.
the real, genuine truth is that we cannot give up. we can’t throw in the towel and decide not to play. we have to vote. we have to fight. we have to be there for each other. we have to do what is necessary to ensure that kindness, righteousness, justice, and law are part of our future. because most of us are going to be here to see it.
we have to fight for all of us to be here to see it.
take care of yourselves and each other, friends. mourn the dead, and fight like hell for the living. together, we are the light in the darkness.
