Sometimes, the best thing you can gift a friend/ family member is a little expanse to their budget.
If you know the person has a home full of knickknacks but a stack of debt, maybe an anime figurine isn’t as helpful as a 20 dollars gift card to their favourite grocery store.
Or it could even be the freedom of choice. They want new clothes but why should you pick it for them if you aren’t certain of their size or taste? Maybe you at least know which stores they frequent.
Gift cards are awesome and useful. (And side note: some stores give you bonus rewards when you buy them)
