People are really so threatened by the idea that romantic love isn’t the end all and be all of things, it would almost be funny if that shit didn’t seriously impact aro folks on a day to day basis.
Don’t be afraid of being aromantic. This identity is wonderful, and it can bring so much peace and happiness. If you are questioning if you’re aro, please know that while it may seem scary, there is so much good to be found in being aro.
in happy academic news: I’ve just come across a literary article which is an asexual reading of Galahad in le Morte d’Arthur. Someone married medieval studies to asexuality. I’M SO HAPPY.
I read it! And I LOVED it. Not that that’s hard … medieval studies happens to be my field and I’m a total medieval romance nerd. So asexual knighthood is now officially my new favorite subject. The author had some really interesting things to say on how to approach “asexuality” in the past. The way they applied it might not be useful for other fields of medieval studies, but it’s food for thought!
And an asexual reading of Galahad works so well! I have to reread Malory now. I’m also wondering how universal this ace!galahad representation is? How is he portrayed in other Arthurian romances and in other traditions like the French or German ones? Questions, questions. I will have to make a trip to the library. Luckily my to-read list now includes delightful titles like “menacing virgins”.
So what can you take away if you’re not a huge Middle Ages nerd like me? That ace!Galahad is totally a thing. Because asexuality is a very likely explanation of Galahad’s deal. Go forth and write Galahad-fiction, people.
Some thoughts on the definition of asexuality that was used
Finally being on uni break plus having more time to catch up on podcasts again is great. Whipped up some variations for quick and simple logos for @soundsfakepod, a podcast about asexuality. Thank you for this rad podcast and keep doing what you’re doing, it’s always great to have more ace resources!
If you haven’t listened to it yet, you can find the podcast on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher and a few other podcast websites.
SO, YOU’RE 13 YEARS OLD AND YOU READ THE WORD “ASEXUAL” ON TUMBLR AND NOW YOU THINK YOU ARE ASEXUAL?? That’s amazing, i’m happy for you, it’s wonderful that you found the word so early, there are so many people who spent years feeling broken and wish they learned about asexuality earlier, also keep in mind that your feelings are valid, no matter if they might change on day, you are important and precious and i got your back, little friend.
Okay but let’s talk about Jean Valjean for a second, because he’s so often overlooked. I definitely head canon him as Asexual and Aromantic but look how much love he has for the world – like agape altruistic love, familial and platonic love and just… He doesn’t have romantic or sexual relations in the brick and that’s okay, like he doesn’t have to. There are other forms of loving and it just makes me very happy to see a character like him. He loves Cosette and Fantine fiercely, he loves the people he protects, he grows to love Marius, he love everyone he works with, he is kind to strangers and the poor and even frickin Montparnasse and even offers love towards Jarvert in that he bears him no ill will. I just love that ace Valjean. *heart eyes emoji* 😍
the purple and green represent ace, aro, nb and nd people. the circle in the middle represents a black hole, hence the lack of humanity/dehumanization. the white represents the unity of our communities.
