After Enjolras finds Grantaire playing dominoes at Richefeu’s, Grantaire tries to amend the accident by inviting Enjolras back to his apartment. Things don’t go exactly as planned.
This takes place after the events at Richefeu’s in the brick, but you don’t have to have read the brick to read this fic. I did my best to continue the storyline in Victor Hugo’s narration style.
give me enjolras who so desperately wants to make a difference in the world but can’t because no one listens to him
give me an enjolras who cries to himself alone because he feels like he can’t do anything because he’s so insignificant
give me enjolras who almost gives up on his dreams because he feels like he’ll never make the difference he wants to see
give me enjolras who works his way to being an idol of social activism so slowly that it hurts
give me enjolras who has to learn to believe in himself as much as his dream
But then give me an R who sees Enjolras one time trying to convince people about his cause and being captivated and finding someone to believe in and just sort of follows Enjolras around with love heart eyes. Enjolras gets really confused.
Here’s the thing! And I’m not saying this to start discourse.
People can interpret anything the way they want to!
You may be sick of seeing the Enjoltaire tag being filled with mushy, cute, them being desperately in love stuff, while guess what???? It’s been filled with that kind of stuff for YEARS!!! YEARS!!! And it’s not going to go away anytime soon.
You’d rather see it as unrequited, Grantaire has feelings for Enjolras, but Enjolras is disgusted with him. Let me drop you a few reminders. Enjolras didn’t mind Grantaire. He was just disappointed in him since he didn’t believe in anything and didn’t understand why he was there if he had nothing to contribute to what they were doing. Also, let’s not forget that it was ENJOLRAS who took Grantaire’s hand when they died. Not the other way around. Grantaire was content dying beside him. Enjolras was the one who took it a step further by taking his hand. So, question, do you honestly believe that Enjolras would do that if he was as disgusted with Grantaire as you think??? I don’t think so. And if you honestly think that Enjolras didn’t care for Grantaire just a little, you are FOOLING yourself!

The way Victor Hugo wrote their relationship was up for interpretation. So let people interpret it the way they want to.

P.S. I’m not sorry for this post. I’ve had a really, really, really, really bad, terrible, fucking day. So, when I go into the Enjoltaire tag and see posts like this, I snap. It’s the last straw (especially when this ship has been my fucking lifeline for the last four years of my life. This ship was my saving grace. Without this ship, I wouldn’t be here anymore). So, don’t fucking @ me for being upset about seeing posts about how fluffy Enjoltaire shouldn’t exist.

ppl who think enjolras was legitimately disgusted by grantaire have fallen victim to fanon!!! when i first read the brick when i was younger with my Fanon Lens i was like oh my god … . how wild. but when i reread it woth my own human brain ??? even their “arguments” seem more like the type of stuff i say to my best friends. like enjolras saying “ur capable of nothing” feels like when i call my bff a “useless dumb fuck” , not when im pissed off at someone. i dont think any of les amis would follow someone who was as irrationally and constantly pissed off as some of the fandom still seems to portray him as. thats my interpretation at least. the frustration can be real for enjolras without there being an unnecessary amount of venom in his dialogue.
