ok but can you imagine a worse, more terrifying fate than medusa’s one? just imagine. first of all you’re raped in your goddess’ temple. which, apart from the obvious trauma, means you can’t keep doing what you devoted your entire life to. your goddess gifts you with the ability to turn those you look at into stone and your hair into snakes so that you can defend yourself and be a threat rather than a victim to men. and then?????? a fucking MAN decides hes gonna hunt you down and slaughter you for…. sport like just because he can?????? and not only does he kill you but he keeps your head as a weapon???????? effectively using you and your body for his own purpose exactly like your rapist??????????????? like??? and this man is considered a hero while you’ll be remembered as a monstruous, dangerous entity???????????????????? medusa deserved better smh
wow the medusa avenging squad rly is there!!! make some noise ladies

Do I really need to explain why I feel the Merc with a mouth was involved in the retelling here?
Listen I will never stop stanning this fucking book, especially because these stories are SO FUN to read aloud.
source: I used to read them aloud to birdie and also did video recordings of a couple, at least one of which you can find linked on the appropriate myth on his blog. SO FUN.
there are a lot of super aesthetic posts about achilles with all these pictures of figs and ichor and whatnot which is fine and cool but i would like to see more posts that recognize that achilles is the type of guy to tie a knife to a roomba and set it off in his tent whenever agamemnon tries to visit him
like yeah achilles is the son of a goddess and the greatest warrior of the greeks and a prince but he’s also the sort of guy who straight up eats protein powder before getting into a knife fight with god in the alley next to the gym
I humbly submit Achilles would be the LAST demigod who would want any kind of whirling knife flailing around at ankle height
I have read (and see) something about Hades and Persephone having chickens in the underworld, but this is really a fact or is something invent?
Chickens were indeed sacred to Hades and Persephone and an example of this are the terracotta votive tablets from Locri -the ones of the pictures-. There are some books about this subject like Iconography of Religions by Bianchi or Locrian Maidens by Redfield.
The cock/chicken “became the chthonic bird, and was used on tombs, as emblematic of the hope of a reawakening to life”. (Peters) and it is also refered as “an infernal animal of passage” by Bernabe in his book Instructions for the Netherworld: the orphic gold tablets. He also says: ”Cocks allude to the world of the afterlife: as intermediaries between the soul and the Beyond, they intercede between the world of the dead and that of the living”.
Remember Persephone was the goddess of renewal, so at least in Locri, the cock was an usual attribute of her. And in other cultures cocks-chickens were seen as animals related to renewal and life (eggs have that symbolism tooo).
😀 so. chickens for Hades and Persephone all the way.
