So for my AP United States History class we have to write a research paper; my topic is the gay rights movement in America. Today I began reading one of the books that I chose as a source

And I opened it up to the dedication page and found this

And if you don’t think that’s one of the sweetest and most romantic things ever then get out of my face

Ok, for the record, the author of this book, Jonathan Rauch, is a friend of my family, I’ve known him since I was a little kid, and I am here to tell you all that he and Michael have been together for 20-odd years now, got married in 2010, and remain to this day obviously, excessively, and adorably in love.

Anyway, they’re cute. Thought y’all would want to know.

since it’s national coming out day how about some les amis coming out hc

  • enjolras came out as trans when he was 16, and though his parents weren’t 100% open minded, as he got older they began to accept him more. as a teen he used to hate them, but now he calls his mom every sunday
  • combeferre came out at bi at 16 too, and like enj his parents were a little confused but ultimately accepting
  • courf never had a choice to stay in the closet. “the sky is blue, water is wet. i like dudes” his flamboyance outed him a long time coming, but thankfully his parents welcomed him lovingly
  • grantaire wanted to come out when he was a teen but his parents, mostly his dad, are not the most accepting. he came out while at college just before he graduated. he doesn’t care that his parents are hateful though. his friends are all the family he needs.
  • jehan coming out as nonbinary to their parents was…complicated. they didn’t understand, and really they didn’t try to. jehan has a distant relationship with them, but like grantaire, being themselves with their friends is all they need
  • for feuilly growing up in various foster homes, he never had anyone to come out to. and for that reason, he’s always felt independent. he knew he was trans, he knew he was gay, and so he was.
  • bahorel came out loud and proud, with a dance routine. he’s dramatic like that.
  • bossuet coming out as bi was really successful, but he didn’t come out to his parents until he was 19
  • joly’s family was shocked to know he was queer and, like boss, also put it off. he actually didn’t come out until he introduced him as his boyfriend…awkward
  • musichetta came out after college via text, not caring about her distant family and not giving a shit.
  • eponine also, did not give a shit. she never came out to her parents, because she never talked to them at all. she sort of came out to azelma, but really she raised her and she knew her little sis would always love her
  • cosette struggled with her coming out. she knew valjean would always love her and was a gentle soul, but still. he was mysterious. when she told him she liked girls, he wept because of how brave she was. cosette also cried. their family is an emotional mess
  • and finally, marius. marius didn’t realize he was bi until well into his 20s, after her started hanging around les amis. so it wasn’t his family he had to come out to— it was them. he sat them all down, announcement style, and told them. there was much applause, many hugs, and a few tears. mostly from marius. he felt so happy to have a family that loved him so much and felt so accepted

i noticed that alot of LBGT kids feel like they have to tell their friends and family that theyre LBGT. even if theyll be rejected

and i want to remind u all that nobody is entitled to knowing your romantic, sexual or gender orientations. nobody. you have no moral obligation to share that information if youre not comfortable with doing so

youre not “lying” by not telling people or “hiding”. cause its honestly no ones business but your own

you come out on your own terms when you feel safe and comfortable doing so!! or you can come out to a few trusted people if you want before telling a larger group

dont feel like you owe that information to anyone ok??

bringing this back for national coming out day!

deadpool is honestly more wholesome than any of the mcu movies

Explain

ok so

  • Doesn’t straightwash queer characters! this was a big one. (marvel movies have a huge problem with straightwashing*)
  • Deadpool is canonically pansexual, and the movies reflect this! Reynolds doesn’t shy away at all from Deadpool’s sexual interest in men.
image
    • (head injuries bring out deadpool’s romantic sexy feelings it seems. in the first movie, knife to the head = romantic montage with vanessa. in the sequel, fencepost to the head = deadpool sensually trying to go down on Colossus.)
    • (semi-related, both movies have some cute references to deadpool enjoying being on the receiving end in the bedroom.)
image
    • (yeah, it’s canon, Deadpool enjoys being pegged)
  • Oh hey, a healthy romantic relationship based on mutual respect and love! and with a fully developed female character with personal agency! A love interest who doesn’t just function as a plot device.
  • POLAR OPPOSITE OF TOXIC MASCULINITY. This really shines through in their marketing
image
image
image
    • (yes that pillows says “FEMINIST”)
image
    • (yes that is deadpool in heels dancing to celine dion)
  • Diverse casting! Characters who are poc just because poc exist!
  • Hey look, a cute lesbian couple treated with respect and one of them’s asian!
image
  •  Holy crap i don’t say this enough but i love Domino. What a badass. Sexy-but-not-sexualized black female action hero who is probably the coolest person in the movie
image
  • Deadpool 2 took a run-of-the-mill white character design and made her interesting!
image
  • Her trademark eye patch is now vitiligo! She has awesome natural hair. And look, body hair exists! On a person who is a woman! Which shouldn’t be unusual, but here we are. Also, she’s fun
image
  • Portrayed by the talented Zazie Beetz. Did I mention how much i love this character?
  • Oh look, another much improved character design!
image
  • We’ve got your humdrum blondie cleft-chin stereotype replaced with a heavyset maori teen actor (Julian Dennison, who incidentally was in Taika Waititi’s indie movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople).
  • Overall themes: The movies have a lot of dirty humor and innuendo. But the overall takeaway is actually pretty sentimental. The Deadpool 2 themes in particular gets to me:
    • Not repeating the mistakes of the previous generation. “Kids give us a chance of being better than we used to be.”
    • The loss and recovery of family. Accepting friendship in the midst of tragedy. See also: Cable’s story arc.
    • Letting go of loss and bitterness to try to save a child who’s been abandoned by the world.
  • I’m honestly so excited about the choices the director & producers have been making for this franchise. They’re setting the narrative standard for modern superhero films. Can’t wait to see what the next movie has in store.

So wait, why is “straightwashing” bad but blackwashing Domino good?

maybe…if we think really…really hard about it…we could come up with a reason why those two things…are not the same…
