i’m so tired of seeing marius reduced to his awkwardness
yes, he’s awkward, but consider— he’s talented at everything he picks up
give me marius who sits down in front of a piano one day and begins playing a song he heard on the streets by memory, who only makes a mistake when he realizes courfeyrac is in the room
give me marius who memorizes long passages of novels or speeches and can recite them off the top of his head, who gets flustered and starts reciting it in an entirely different language
give me marius who can bake amazing things out of the weirdest ingredients with absolutely no recipe to follow, who accidentally burns the first batch because he got so distracted talking to enjolras about this documentary he’d seen the night before
give me marius who knows the best places all over the world to visit for an authentic experience, who gets lost when he’s leading the way because he got distracted by the flower shop across the way
give me marius accidentally tears jehan’s crocheted sweater but turns out to be excellent with knitting needles and fixes it without any problem
give me marius who turns out to have a mean right hook, a fact learned first hand by bahorel when he’d playfully swung at marius
give me marius with an intellect that could rival combeferre’s, one he keeps to himself for the most part because combeferre is more clever with words even though marius is the quickest with facts
give me marius who isn’t reduced to just his awkwardness, give me marius who knows his anxieties and handles his awkwardness and is still an amazing person, cultured and clever and full of love and happiness that he spreads.
this just reminded me of a scene in the brick (i don’t know if it’s just my copy of les mis that made me think of this by the way it was worded but i’m going to say it anyway) when courf asks marius what he is going to do as marius is running out of money and unemployed and so he asks marius if he can speak german or english because he knows someone who is looking for a translator and marius is like ‘no, but i’ll learn’ and that just made me think….‘so…what? he’s just going to pick it up like that?’ but this post opened up my mind (especially the second point you made) to marius being able to just decide he’s going to learn a language and just…learns it because he’s good at picking things up
I have a really vivid mental image of Marius standing outside Cosette’s window at midnight, blasting “Uptown Girl” on a boombox and it strikes me as being very in character
so headcanon that Marius doesn’t tell Cosette about Courfeyrac because he’s still hurting from his death and talking about it with Cosette will only make it a confirmed reality
meanwhile Cosette notices that Marius sometimes carries around with him a handkerchief that she does not recognise as one of his own or hers (and not her papa’s either, Ursule is still a running joke between them)
one night he’s sitting on the edge of the bed gazing at it, and Cosette finally asks whose it might be
and that’s when Marius finally gives in and tells her about Courfeyrac because the handkerchief was his and it was the one item of Courfeyrac’s which Marius could not bare to part with, and how Cosette would not have noticed but he had tucked it into his pocket during their wedding so that, in a way, the best man would be present
Marius and Grantaire meeting for the first time. That’s it. Just R’s cynicism being so powerful that Marius basically pees his pants whenever he has to speak to him.
